meet chris

Hello.  I'm Christine Varwig and I am currently serving in a second term on the Toledo Public Schools Board of Education. I am seeking another term to continue the progress we are making in our district.

I am a proud graduate of Bowsher HS, Class of 1986.  I have been married to my husband, Randy, for 31 years and he is a Woodward HS graduate.  My daughter, Caitlyn, is a Bowsher  graduate.  I'm thrilled to say my granddaughter is entering Kindergarten this coming school year in TPS.  We are truly a TPS Proud Family!

I started this journey as a parent wanting to help our students and schools.  I became the President of the Beverly PTO, Byrnedale PTO, Bowsher Boosters, and the TPS Parent Congress.  I consider my years leading parent groups as what has prepared me for the role of school board member.

Since joining the TPS Board of Education in January of 2014, I have:

  • made it a priority to be fiscally responsible with tax payer dollars

  • supported efforts to increase student opportunities like our Career Tech programs

  • worked with my colleagues to keep our Strategic Plan at the forefront

  • initiated Parent University (now known as the TPS Family & Community Collaborative)

  • supported efforts for equitable and financial gains for the hard-working TPS employees

  • advocated for our Student Voice initiative

  • advocated for district-wide recess

  • spearheaded installation of a fully-accessible playground

  • helped to revitalize the TPS Foundation

I have served on the following TPS Board of Education committees:

  • Finance and Business Operations

  • Curriculum

  • Family & Community Engagement

  • Policy

  • Community & Public Relations

  • Arts, Athletics and Student Activities

  • OSFC

I have served as President of the TPS Board of Education in 2017 and currently in 2021.

I am a member of the Ohio School Boards Association and have served on several committees including as President of the OSBA North West Region Executive Committee.  I have recently been nominated for the President-Elect 2022 position where I would become OSBA President in 2023.  The last TPS Board Member to fill that role was 1974.

I was selected to attend The Ohio State University's John Glenn College of Public Affairs 2021 Ohio Public Leadership Academy for Elected Officials this summer.  Those selected to attend are considered "rising stars" as public servants in Ohio.  My fellow attendees were Mayors, City Councilmen/women, Township Trustees, Commissioners, Recorder, and State Representatives; I was the only School Board Member invited!

I am, also, currently serving on the Board of the TPS Foundation and Kids Voting Ohio.
